Pura Luhur Uluwatu means something like "The Temple above the rock" and it is situated on the southernmost part of Bali on the Bukit peninsula. In former days the raja's of Denpasar used this area as hunting field. This part of Bali is different from the others. It is dry and not rich on vegetation, but there is one of the most beautiful sea temple of Bali.
Because of its remoteness the area around the temple is less commercialized. The temple is a place for frequent ceremonies. Fishermen come here to pray to Dewi Laut, the sea goddes. They are telling about a legend that says that the rock was a ship in former days which was transformed into stone.
If you decide to come here, you will see a lot of monkeys and will have a fantastic view over the ocean.
