Volcano and Lake Batur

The volcano Batur is situated inside a huge caldera and still active, so you can watch the smoke which is constantly seeping out of it. Batur is also the name for a village and the largest lake on Bali which is 7 km long and 2.5 km wide. The top of the volcano is 1.717 meter. The eruption in 1917 killed about 1.000 people, mainly those who lived in the Batur village on the southern slopes of the volcano. The people continued to live there until 1926 when a new eruption destroyed the village completely. We recommend to get to the volcana via the Penelokan village southwest of the volcana, from here you have the greatest view over the lake. A lot of villages are located around the lake, the largest one is Tirta (Toya Bungkah). Here it is possible to take a bath in the hot springs around the town. Near the lake batur you also find the most unique village on Bali. The people of Trunyan (Bali Aga village) are descendants of the pre-Hindu population. It is possible to get there by boat from Kedisan. The interesting thing are their rituals. In the north are their graveyard where are laying bones of humen beings, because the people do not bury their deads. Instead of that their deads are decompose in open air. It is very easy to climb volcano Batur. The walk takes about two hours and it is the best to start very early, to see the sun rising from the top. It is popular to cook food in the hot springs and to join the beautiful view
